A good, related story from 30 years ago:

As most know, in Canada, we have postal codes as opposed to zip codes. They are six letters and numbers, separated by a space after the first three characters.

In the east end of my city, one of the postal codes starts with N5W, so an examplle would be N5W 3L4.

Someone I know in that postal code was awaiting a letter that never seemed to arrive. Finally, after who knows how long, it did. Looking at one of the postmarks, it had been diverted to New South Wales, Austraila. Someone at Canada Post saw "N5W" and mistook it for New South Wales. I guarantee you that worker was Australian, because nobody else on this continent would make such a mistake. Most non-Australians have barely heard of New South Wales, let alone would their minds immediately mistake that postal code for an abbreviation of a place on the other side of the planet.
