Jared- welcome to the board. I would use all the resources you mentioned, and just learn a little about prices. I wouldn't limit myself to a single source. If you are doing this as an investment I would look for the best quality you can afford, at least cards with a pleasing appearance.

Someone else will have to chime in about shows, but the National in Cleveland would be a good place to interact with other vintage collectors.
