Being in a position where I am responsible for receiving large numbers of packages my experience is that USPS is more reliable than the private carriers for one simple reason. Fedex, UPS, et al, will have you sign for packages in bulk. That is, I often receive twenty packages or more at once and only sign once. I don't see a list of the packages so on rare occassions I have signed for packages that hadn't actually been delivered. On the other hand, the USPS carriers always ask for each delivery to be signed for individually ensuring that what I sign for is what is left with me.

I have learned that if a delivery man I don't recognize or trust brings more than a few packages that I should insist on seeing a list matching the items I am signing for.
