Here's an answer that's not exactly what you're looking for but...
Sets get hot. For a while now the caramel issues have been heating up in popularity. T206s have been popular for a long time but the Topps 206 offering brought a little more interest to the set.
It seems that sets cycle through hot/cold periods but I don't think that you could associate a cold cycle with a dreastic drop in price for any given set.
