A lot of collector/dealer types use the year end to consolidate their inventories, generate cash flow (gotta buy the kid the GI Joe with the Kung Fu grip), and dump things at a loss to offset income in advance of tax season. That may be one reason you are seeing many $9.99 auctions with no reserves: as much as 45% of the loss realized on those sales will offset income taxes that would otherwise be owed.
