Canon's Canoscan line has a real good track record. I'm still using the 8400, and have done a lot of scanning with it. It's been a workhorse, and it's still doing a great job. When I get my new laptop, I'll upgrade to the 9000F mkII, but I'm happy with the results, especially with what I paid for it. Obviously, it wouldn't work for the latest Windows release, but with 7, works fine.
It handles all varieties and thicknesses of slabs with no problem.
