Guess the owner thought that with all that space (8+ inches in diameter), it would be a good place for him to make his mark

Reminds me of a Chinese emperor (Manchurian, actually) who was a great collector of Chinese art through the ages. trouble was, he LOVED to write his own 2 cents worth of poetry or impressions, and stamp his big square chop all over the greatest works of Chinese art.
When the greatest painting of all was headed for the palace, people wasted no time getting Wang Wei to FORGE the painting, and present the forgery to the emperor. Fortunately, it fooled him. After he died, the original was brought out again.
