As a youngster I saw Hank Bauer play numerous times. My favorite place to sit was in the lower right field grandstands so I had a ringside seat to his, and later Maris's, office in Yankee Stadium's starboard garden. Just gotta close my eyes and I can see him out there plain as day. Wonderful memories.
As best as I can tell Bauer was not on Iwo Jima but he had a hell of a war record, fighting in the Guadalcanal campaign, Guam and Okinawa.

The portrait was taken in 1942. I just won the locker room photo from RMY the other day. It was taken at spring training in 1950. Bauer is easy to spot.
