Charles Ward, b 1831

Joshua Ward, b 1838, known as ‘Josh’,

GilbertWard, b 1841,

Ellis Ward, b 1846

Just got this CDV tonight off eBay...IT's only the third CDV I've owned...It's of the Ward Brothers who were renown orasman from Middle Hope, New York...which I assume is along the Hudson River. Josh Ward won many singles titles, including the U.S. professional single sculls title on October 11, 1859,. Ellis Ward was Penn's first crew coach from 1879 to 1912. The Ward brothers were victorious over another famous rowing family, the Biglin brothers for the professional four-oared championship of America.

Josh Ward was trainer of the Yale crew in 1869 and of the Amherst crew in 1871. By 1880 Joshua Ward ran a hotel in Cornwall, New York. During the 1870s and 1880s Ellis Ward coached a number of non-collegiate boat clubs, including the Columbia Boat Club in Washington, D.C., the Fairmount Boat Club of Philadelphia, the Bohemian Boat Club of New York, and of course the University of Pennsylvania.

I don't know what to make of the condition...It looks kind of like it's been trimmed or something..and the text, what ever it says, appaears to be faded. Anyone have an opinion on the condition and what's up with it? Only gave $50.00 so not too worried about it....I don't know much about CDV's is $50.00 about right?
