They mark the item with a synthetic DNA marker that can only be viewed with a laser. A figurative invisible hologram.
That and I'm sure they thought the name sounds cool.
A DNA examination of your Kirby Puckett signed index card would probably cost you $5,000. And, even then, I don't know how knowing the DNA of the index card would do you any good. Prove you're not the father, perhaps.
