Perhaps the owner of the card didn't like the aesthetic of such a modern edge on a 100 year old card and purposely worked the corners so it would look less shocking to the eye. If we want to give him the benefit of the doubt, perhaps he even told this to PSA when submitting and wouldn't have accepted a numerical grade.

Pretty much just as bad, though. Because if they reworked it to be more pleasing (less shocking) to the eye for resale, that's the definition of doctoring.
Even if not for resale, I don't like it. If you don't like the way the card looks, don't buy it. To buy it and then "correct" a problem, IS a problem.
