Scott,
I have to say that in the T206 world, I have felt quite positive when seeing
tobacco stains on the cards, particularly the Polar Bears.
I've never felt the stains brought aesthetic negativity. In fact, they somehow hold aesthetic positivity, in my own view.
Granted, my Polar Bears have only modest stains,and I realize that you may be dealing with a greater degree of stain.

I would see removing the stain as an alteration.
