T206Collector...That the white cap is somewhat scarcer since the dark cap was one of the six "super prints," i.e. printed with much more frequency. The six super prints are Red Cobb, Blue portrait Chase, dark cap chase, yellow chance and evers chicago on shirt, if memory serves me.
But I agree that the dark cap is the better specimen.
As to why the NY in one but not the other? Purely artistic discretion.
