Max WederI have never turned down buying a vintage book due to a lack of aesthetics. That said, much of the appeal of book collecting appeal for me is similar to card collecting: the more attractive the cover, the more desirable it is.
For example, here is the first work of fiction "by" that noted novel novelist, George Herman Ruth, from 1920. The book itself is tortuous to read (as most early baseball fiction is), but the dust jacket cover is appealing.
