David McDonaldMisspelled words, bad grammar and/or clunky syntax are obvious tip-offs that the e-mail is bogus. For instance, in JimB's example the word "rightful" is incorrectly spelled with two l's. Often the mistakes are more worse, I mean, more egregious.
