I would try soaking first. There's a current thread that tells you how. I think soaking is a longshot though in your case. If you try it be very careful not to pull paper off when trying to peel the tape. Steaming may be a better option. Regardless you'll likely have discolorization (the pros call it "foxing") due to the acids in the tape.
You may just have to live with it or send it to a professional (very expensive).
