GlennYou're trying to categorize a continuous variable. We wouldn't even be having this argument except for the historical fact that humans (most places) use the decimal system. .400 is not qualitatively different from .392 or .323 or .178 for that matter just because it begins with a different digit; it's just a higher number. Any manager in the world would take a lineup full of .350 hitters over one with half of the team batting .400 and half of them at the Mendoza line.
OPS is empirically more important than BA in producing runs (by rather a wide margin in fact).
