Yes our "sensitivity" does render nicknames like: "Chief" (any indian player), "Dummy" (deaf players) off-limits.
Many of my favorites date from the 19th century:

"Orator Jim" O'Rourke and his opposite "Silent" Mike Tiernan
"Old Hoss" Radborne

The Negro Leagues had many good ones including:
"Heavy" Johnson
Willie "the Devil" Wells; and the immortal
"Cool Papa" Bell;

I also like
"the Rabbi of Swat" Moe Solomaon
"Losing Pitcher" Mulcahy
and today's "The Big Unit"
