If you send the card in an SGC holder and ask for the half-grade bump it is very possible your card will come back in the SGC holder. If you crack the card and send it raw to PSA your chances of a higher grade are better but many things can go wrong. I have only had one card come back with a higher grade and that was a 1965-66 Hockey card that went from a BGS 7 to a PSA 8 using the re-grade service. Otherwise, the grades have been the same or lower for my submissions.
