runscottI enjoy holding and studying tobacco cards, but the appeal of owning any particular card wears off fairly quickly - mainly because they were mass-produced and can be re-obtained easily in most cases.
I "collect" anything related to pre-wwi baseball history. But after I've studied it, photographed it, taken notes, I generally get very little pleasure from actual ownership. Exceptions are a few pre-wwi baseball photos, a 1910-ish baseball uniform, and a pile of beat-up pre-wwi baseball publications...probably the only things a thief would leave.
