Color film and developing was significantly more expensive than B&W pre-1970s, analogous to long-distance phone calls, enough so to be a consideration in how they both were were used. Anyone from that time can remember well a household member yelling in the background, "Hey, it's long distance!" when one of those calls got too long-winded, meaning more than about five or ten minutes. I grew up comfortably middle class in the 1950s and 60s, but money was tight, you didn't spend any frivolously on anything.
