One thing for sure, as there wasn't a lot of decent film of early 20th century baseball, Burns wanted images that they could pan across in order to give the illusion of motion.
They used a few pictures from my collection. I had this astounding photo of Joe Jackson in street clothes holding a trophy. Once in a while you see that pic in an auction. I thought, "How can they not use this?" But they didn't. It was too static an image, I guess.
You would have to ask Ken Burns, but that's my take on what made for good television.
