The most I ever spent on a single card was a little over $1,000 for the card in my avatar. As I have written on here before, I like collecting auto racing cards because there are only a handful of cards that sell for over $500 individually. "Lorenzen with car" is a legendary rarity and probably the most valuable racing card in the hobby. My personal limit had always been $1,000, but I put in a snipe that slightly exceeded that when the card showed up on eBay.
There are 4-5 non-racing cards on my want list that I would go $1,200-1,500 for if they ever showed up at auction, however.
