Google lapsed briefly sometime in 2016 and the domain was bought by a former executive. Apparently about 5 minutes after he got the receipt for his payment the registering organization emailed him to say the lapse and availability had been an oversight and they were returning the registration to Google. His refund was done at the same time. He was amused by the whole thing and happy to be able to say he owned google.com for a short time.
Mine, which I've done almost nothing with it renews automatically.
