It had a semi-happy ending. I asked for a partial refund; otherwise, I would send it back. He gave me the refund and apologized with a note: "Sorry for the problem. I thought I put do not bend. May not matter."
As a seller, I'm vaguely irritated when a customer tells me how to pack and ship their item, but now I think I get it. The seller is a perfectly nice guy - he just doesn't know how to pack and ship fragile items.
