The back advertisements differ based on the -5 and -4 designation, too. For example, Sporting News ads are found only on -4 cards. The OC site breaks this down, too.
Todd Schultz and Tim Newcomb wrote an article for Old Cardboard Magazine #16. I highly recommend picking up a back issue.

Thank you for the info. I will snag a back issue. The card I scored has a blank back and according to the checklist, he is available in both sets. I am not sure if one can tell in this case.
