And then he rested.<br><br>This purchase on the Bay this evening completes another segment of my Tobacco Cubs team sets...the original leg of the journey is completed with number 37 finally falling into place. (A big thanks to Steve Murray for continued encouraging correspondence, a few of the cards, and spotting this last one for me!)<br><br>So far, T200, T201, T205, T206 and T207 (excl. Miller) are now completed. Perhaps I can attempt T3, T222 and T204 after the recession.<br><br>Welcome home, Mordecai. These blank-backed 1 5/8 by 2 3/8-inch B&W cards actually were issued in clear plastic wrappers with caramel candy in 1923 in the New York, St. Louis and San Francisco Bay regions. They should be considered "E" cards. Scarcity and use of photos not seen in other card sets make this a highly coveted issue. I hope it is as decent in person as it looks here...hoping for maybe even a little better registration than the scan shows, but we will see.<br><br><br><br>And thanks to everyone for the congrats. This one took a while, and I entered 2008 with only 2 of the HOFer cards, so it has been a little bit of a task and I am glad to be done. I didn't realize when I started that the Cubs team set would be such a chunk of the T206 set! It's a little more than 7% of the set, with 13 HOFers - isn't that like 20-25% of the T206 HOFer cards??!! (I can do math, but I don't know the HOFer card count off the top of my head)<br><br>Edited to add:<br>Doug, I saw on the 3rd pickup thread -that Cubs Shirt Evers you picked up is gorgeous. one tough card, and your selection has fantastic eye appeal - for the grade and on an absolute basis. Blaeholder is one of those oddities that, despite being dead for over 60 years, is not that tough an acquisition from an autograph standpoint. The opposite can be said of finding him on a signed Goudey, however! Spencer, although alive a decade longer than Blaeholder, is a much rarer signature.

I have collected Blaeholder for quite a while and have 10 autographs of him right now including a single signed ball (a bit rough though) but I have only ever seen a few signed photos and never a Gum Card. That is a great card and I am jeleous of it. He will never make the Hall of Fame due to his numbers even though many people called him the toughest pitcher they ever faced. He is often credited with inventing the "Slider" but it is more likely he just the pitcher who turned it into a popular and viable pitch with success for some really bad teams.<br><br>

Posted By: <b>Jodi Birkholm</b><p>Benton and Bing Miller are other examples of easy acquisitions of long-deceased players, but, again, tougher on certain media such as cards. I've seen a few '33 Goudey Bentons out there, but never a Bing Miller. The Miller signature on that card is more stilted than I am used to. It also appears to be signed in ballpoint, so perhaps he was having trouble with the pen on that surface--who knows? As a side note, Miller was close to his teammate (and my old buddy) Joe Hauser, even serving as his best man at Joe's 1924 wedding. I once sold a Bing Miller cut signature to a guy in Scotland, who, like the player, was named Edmund John Miller.

It is now the THIRD benton that I have though one is trimmed. I have a much nice Bing Miller signed but I think this newer one was signed close to when he died. Ive seen one other spencer before but it may have been this one as the ink blots on it looked very familiar to me. The Charles Berry is also very good as its the first Ive ever seen even though he died in 1972. Im sure there are probably more but considering ive been collecting these for 20 years thats saying something.
