Show us your E91-1-2-3 cards
Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
In another Thread....the subject of Walter Johnson missing in E-type cards was noted. However,
he is in E91-3 set. I do not have a Johnson, but shown here is Charles Wagner's card from this
series This series was the last one of three in this set to be issued (1910 or 1911); and, includes
players from the Washington team. The artwork on the front of each card is of a "generic" style,
that is totally different from the fronts of all the other E-card sets.

I would like to see the E91 Johnson card....or any other E91 cards....so, show us your cards ?

Incidently, do we know where this Caramel set was produced ?

T-Rex TED

Posted By: Judge Dred (Fred)
Ted,

I think this is where we're going to see a lot of players that look the same... That's one reason I don't like that set too much.

Posted By: Rhett Yeakley
There are many players in the first series (A) that are pretty good representations of the players ( at least as good as E90-1 a lot of the times), and some of those players were shown again in the second series (B), even the McGraw isn't terrible. Take a look at series 1's of Evers, Tinker (same photo as Wagner in 3rd series), Waddell, Plank, Reulbach (same photo as t206), Donlin, and Bender--all fairly good representations.
Edited: I should note that evryone in the 3rd series (C) does NOT look like themselves.
-Rhett

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
RHETT

I am in agreement with you regarding the pix on the 1st series cards and their somewhat likeness
to the real ballplayers. It appears by the time they were doing the artwork for the 3rd series, they
were too "tired" to draw pictures that resembled the actual players.

TED Z

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
Thanks for showing us your E91 Johnson.....it still puzzles me that he is depicted
following thru as a Southpaw. The lettering on his uniform dispels any suggestion
that the picture is possibly reversed.

Do you have a Honus Wagner from this 3rd series to show us ?

T-Rex TED

Posted By: leon
Unfortunately one of the things about type card collecting is that I don't get too deep into many sets (by definition). These are my 3 lonely types I have. I have sold a Wagner or two but don't remember the specifics of them very well, offhand. take care..

Posted By: barrysloate
I've had several E91 Wagners and the card just shows him leaning on a bat with his right hand. The portrait is generic and looks nothing like him.

Posted By: Rhett Yeakley
The reason Wagner looks nothing like his E91-C is that picture of Wagner is simply a picture of Joe Tinker (actually looks like Tinker as well), that they reused from E91-A and E91-B with the word "Pittsburg" on his chest. Also, the reason the Johnson is wierd is they did the same thing with him, the picture was used for Rube Waddell in E91-A, and pictures Harry Krause in E91-B.

There were only 33 pictures used in all 3 sets, they just changed the name and teams on people as they made set B and set C. As set C has entirely new teams it is the "most generic" of all 3, with set A being the "most realistic", of course this is all relative.
-Rhett

Here is a E91-B Krause to compare to:
http://cgi.ebay.com/1909-E91-B-KEAUSE-ATHLETICS_W0QQitemZ150075596161QQihZ005QQcategoryZ 86840QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
Thanks for your expertise on the 3rd series cards.

It certainly accounts for Johnson's southpaw follow through. Rube Waddell was a lefty pitcher.

TED Z
