Baseball cards of players who never played in the minor leagues

Posted By: bruce Dorskind

Al Kaline, Bob Horner and Mel Ott are three well known stars who never played
a day of minor league baseball.

Excluding the Negro League and winter ball in Cuba and Mexico, does any one
know players whose images appear on E, T and pre-war R cards (regular issues)
who never played minor league baseball/

Could we form a team of the best of each of these players at each position?

Should be a good day's work for super-trivia experts.

Thanks,

Bruce

Posted By: Cat
I don't think Robin Yount or John Olerud did either (Olerud possibly may have spent a few games for tune-ups late in his career). I do think Jim Abbott went back to the minors later in his career when he was going through some control struggles.

None of the fore-mentioned guys were on T, E or any pre-war cards to the best of my knowledge.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
Jay, Bo Jackson played AA ball with the Memphis Chicks. I distinctly remember this because the folks in Omaha were sorely disappointed that he completely skipped AAA and went straight from Memphis to the Majors.

Posted By: Jon Canfield
Ok, I may be wrong here so someone can correct me but I thought Bill Dahlen never played a day in the minors. If I'm correct, he certainly would fit the bill of a player with t-cards that never played minor-league ball and also would be an impressive short-stop on the team of non-minor legaue greats!

Posted By: M Wheat
Don't want to hijack the thread, but this topic is not that extensive and is a variation of the original question. There were several managers, some of which have regular cards, that never played professional ball. Who were they...

Posted By: Dan Bretta
Strawberry played almost 4 years in the minors before playing MLB. Pete Incaviglia went straight to the majors out of college.

This is an interesting subject and I'm sure one that's been studied by some SABRite in the past. Did Eddie Collins ever play minor league ball? It seems to me that he may have been one that jumped straight from college to the majors. Didn't he lose his college eligibility because he played MLB at the same time he was still in college? How about Christy Matthewson??? I think when looking at the prewar and deadball era when the minors were not really tied into the major leagues like they are today that odds are likely that you would have had to have been a college player to make the jump. The scouting system just wasn't in place to "discover" a high school phenom. I'm not saying that it didn't happen though...I just don't know.

Posted By: Mark Macrae
There are a number of subjects in the Zeenut series, not counting Fatty Arbuckle, who only "tried out" for the club, but never played in a regulation game (major or minor league), yet ended up on a card...... To answer the question above, Jim Thorpe played for Portland in the PCL in 1922

Posted By: Daniel Bretta
Did Thorpe play in the minors before making his major league debut? Lots of players from that era finished out their careers in the minors...notably the PCL.
