Posted By: John E
I have a question about this photo in Lelands current auction, specificly where is Eddie Plank?
http://www.lelands.com/bid.aspx?lot=1526&auctionid=605
The reason I ask is I can't find any reference to Eddie Plank ever playing in Milwaukee or the American Association. If he is in the photo, is it possible this is from 1900 or before, when Milwaukee was part of the Western League?

Posted By: Judge Dred (Fred)
Plank was pretty much pitching full time for Philadelphia in the AL in 1902. I wonder which one they think is Plank.

Milwaukee was only in the AA for the 1891 season.

It's a nice looking picture.

Here's the item description:

Sepia-toned 6 ˝ x 4 ˝” photo shows team portrait of the Milwaukee ball club from the outlaw baseball league, the American Association, who were once a legit major league team from 1882 to 1891, but, starting in 1902, the year this photo more than likely radiates from, began operating independently outside of the Major Leagues. Standout left-handed pitchers Nick Altrock, who would go onto the Majors (primarily as a Chicago White Sox and Washington Senator) after his brief stint with Milwaukee, and Eddie Plank, baseball's winningest lefthander pre-Spahn, figure most prominently in photo. This great original is mounted on black board - which has four small punch holes - and has detached matte; both board and matte have written below photo, “Milwaukee,” in white ink. Photo is NRMT.

Posted By: John E
Yeah, if he is in the photo that would have to him. Here are the pre 1901 Milwaukee teams...
# Milwaukee Brewers, Western League (1892, 1894-1896, 1898-1899)
# Milwaukee Creams, Western League (1897)
# Milwaukee Brewers, American League (1900)
A possible to connection to Plank would be that Connie Mack was a manager of Brewers around the turn of the century
