Beware there are lots of E90-1 fakes circulating

Posted By: Bob
Private auctions and sales as well as ebay. The cards all seem to have come from one or two different sources. You can tell by the feel of the cards and the glossy fronts and backs. The backs have been artifically aged with tea or some other substance. There may be an attempt to lend authenticity by having a small crease. The colors are "not quite right" which is the first tip off. The fakes are getting better and better which is one reason to worry. Also, on many fakes there is a number "20" in the top left area which the cretins have discovered needs to be removed.

Posted By: quan
i think before collecting a set you should get to know the issue and its characteristics. buying graded stuff isn't necessarily the answer.

Posted By: Cobby33
Agreed, but there's only so much time in the day and where do you draw the line between being "informed" and being so skittish you never buy another card again?

Posted By: quan
well not everything is learned in one day, it's a great hobby and i enjoy talking about cards (particularly caramels) and learning from other collectors with common interests...such as pete c, tbob, tim s, jim b scott b etc and you pick up little by little. it's a fun and relaxing journey. i've found grading companies to be pretty worthless except assigning grades accurately at an 85% clip.

Posted By: fkw
These cards are fairly easy to spot if you have a clear scan like the Bresnahan above. I always look at the caption at bottom. When they make/design these reprints they crop just the photo part of the card then have to reproduce the border and have to add a new caption similar to the authentic card at the bottom. Most reprints dont get the caption style, font, or spacing of the letters quite right. On these E90-1 the caption is way to clean and crisp looking and the letters "a", "g", etc. are slightly different in design. Also the ink color is slightly different.

If the scans are smaller and or slightly blury it is much tougher to tell.

Here is a couple of real ones, note the caption
lettering.
