Allegheny's vs. Alpha's

Posted By: Paul
As the proud owner of an Allegheny card, I've got to ask why Alpha's go for so much more. Right now, REA is auctioning the Allegheny and the Alpha of Kid Gleason. The Allegheny is at $700 while the Alpha is at $12000. Both cards are literally one of a kind. I know the Alpha is 10 years older, but that can't make much of a difference. And, though I've never seen an Alpha in person, I assume they are much higher quality cards than Allegheny's. But still, does that really account for a huge price difference?

Allegheny's vs. Alpha's

Posted By: Hal Lewis
I think the difference in price between the sets is due mostly to the NUMBER of cards available from each set.

All of the type card collectors wants a card from each set... but there are MANY MANY MORE cards available from the Alleghany set than there are from the Alphas.

Also, since the Alleghany's have been out there in circulation for several years now while the Alphas were all "locked up"... the "demand" for the Alphas was able to grow during the years when the hobby took off.

In other words... anyone who really wanted an Alleghany card ALREADY GOT ONE back when cards were a lot cheaper than they are now.

Not true for the Alphas. It's now or never.

Allegheny's vs. Alpha's

Posted By: fkw
One is an unattractive game card, and one is an older far more attractive cabinet lookalike card that is far scarcer overall. Only 14 people can own an Alpha, yet 104 can own an Allegheny.
