S74 question--just making sure

Posted By: Todd Schultz
Aren't S74 whites considered to be of far lesser value when they lack the paper backing? This one looks nice and is a HOFer, but there is no paper--can this be considered nm-mt without the backing?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8784148646&rd=1&sspage name=STRK%3AMEWA%3APIC&rd=1

Posted By: David Smith
Not only does the silk NOT have the backing but there is fraying at the top from threads missing.

Posted By: Judge Dred (Fred)
I think most collectors accept the silks without the backings. The backings do add a pretty good premium. As you might already be aware, the color silks were issued without the paper backs. There are different manufacturers represented for the paper backed silks.

Posted By: John S
Very interesting. I saw a Cobb w/o backing go for $200 and change about a year ago. My personal opinion on the silks, if they are missing the backing they should not be graded or downgraded significantly.

Posted By: Patrick McMenemy
Although it is true that colored silks are normally found without backing, several have been found with the backing.
David Festberg had several in one of his auctions about 6-8 years back including a Charles Dooin.

Patrick

Posted By: Todd Schultz
Patrick, do you know if the colors with backs also showed a brand and factory number printed on the front?

Posted By: Joe
The silks that should have backs and don't have them are damaged, that grade of 8 is not right. Should be at least 1/2 of that grade. I also would like to know if the colored silks that had paper backs had the advertising on the top and bottom?

Joe

Posted By: Patrick McMenemy
Sorry, I do not know. The lot description simply mentioned how rare it was to have backings on colored silks.

Patrick

Posted By: Todd Schultz
but is it possible to "reback" these silks with the paper from a lesser player card? Is this a concern among collectors of this issue?

S74 question--just making sure

Posted By: Art M.
The color silks were issued without any backing. The manufacturer (Old Mill, Turkey Red, Red Sun, Helmar) were printed on the front of the silk along with the factory information.
The white silks were issued with backing and all of the above information was printed on the paper backing.

Posted By: andy becker
hey fellas,
the silk in question is overgraded by 6 grades (maybe 7) , imo. it should be a one or two grade....no higher.
a white silk without the back is no better than good condition. talk about buying the holder....sheeeesh.

regarding color solks with backings, i believe that those were some type of proofs.
rea had one last spring, red silk with a backing.
the color silks with back have a "chip board" back versus a white silk which has a cardboard back.
the chip board backs are common in the actress series.

regarding rebacking of white silks, i have seen one crude attempt....a cobb, if i recall. it was at last years national.
silks would not easily be rebacked, as the width would have to match exactly.
regards
