What is this??? (identification help please)

Posted By: fkw
It bugs me when I cant figure out what set a card is from. I rarely get stumped, but this one did it. It is 3" by 5" & blank back. Earl Whitehill played for Washington from 1933-36. As far as I know it is not a R313, R313A, R314. It has a similar design to a Homogenized Bond Bread card, but is larger and at least 11 years older. I had to BIN because it stumped me

Anyone know or see these???

Frank

Posted By: Tim Newcomb
The Whitehill card is from the borderless subset of Goudey Wide Pens. The generally accepted ACC designation would be R314B-1

The borderless varieties are scarcer than the average Wide Pen, though not out of the ballpark. Read more about 'em in my article in the next issue of Old Cardboard.

Tim

Posted By: fkw
Thanks Tim, I am looking forward to the 2nd part of the R313/R314 "Pens" article. I read the first part in the 3D issue of Old Cardboard a couple times, lots of good info that made me more interested in the sets. I recently picked up a group of the Gold Metal Foods (Wheaties) cards.
