Posted By: Robert
Well we are almost 1 week into this auction and I am a little perplexed, in the last 2 Mastro auctions almost all of my bids where overtaken in the first 2 days. I might add that I had a few lots for sale in those auctions and the prices went up and then stalled, there where no last minute rising in the prices like EBAY. This time I followed the same strategy and I am still the leader on 16 auctions, which is not a bad thing but I expected to be overtaken by most of them and hopefully a couple will hold out to the end for me to win. I also noticed lately on EBAY that most auctions are now making full price early and not getting that last munite surge from snipers.

Even when they reach similar ends, auctions can follow widely divergent paths. It often comes down to whether randomly picked bidder prefers to bid early or late, or whether he got around to looking at the catalogs on a Monday or a Friday.

Posted By: tbob
I have been swamped on many of my caramel card bids, especially on the E94s. I find I am looking for nice cards and bargains in sets I haven't previously collected, like the Sporting News, 19th Century and regional tobacco issues. Is anyone else doing this or are you slugging it out on the cards from sets already being collected?

Posted By: Cat
At the end of the day, November 22nd I printed out my bid list (I put a bunch of bids early so that if I still have interest on the last day I can participate during the 30 minute rule period). Below are the closing prices as of that time and in parenthesis are the number of bids since that time. The activity in the last ten days on these relatively elite/high demand cards is very minimal. The additional bids in the last ten days ranges from 0 to 5, with 10 out of the 11 cards receiving 3 or fewer bids. It seems to me that these auctions that have 20 day bidding periods could accomplish the same result by shrinking it to 10 days. I don't know about the rest of you but the last ten days has seemed like "hurry up and wait" which just serves to aggravate me.

- 1595 1909-11 T206 White Border Walter Johnson/Pitching with Rare "Broad Leaf 460" Reverse $3,146 (3 bids)
- 1612 1909 T204 Ramly Walter Johnson $7,985 (2 bids)
- 1625 1916 M101-5 Sporting News Joe Jackson $3,768 (2 bids)
- 1626 1915 M101-5 Sporting News #151 Babe Ruth Rookie Card $15,307 (5 bids)
- 1629 1915 Cracker Jack #103 Joe Jackson $8,888 (0 bids)
- 2669 1909-11 T206 White Border Ty Cobb with "Ty Cobb" Reverse $22,413.00 (1 bid)
- 2674 1909-11 E90-1 American Caramel Partial Set (83/120) $16,838 (2 bids)
- 2675 1910 E90-2 American Caramel Pittsburgh Pirates Complete Set $6,134 (0 bids)
- 2696 1910 E103 Williams Caramel Partial Set (23/30) $11,959 (3 bids)
- 2711 1911 T212 Obak Cigarettes Buck Weaver $2,310 (2 bids)
- 2731 1911 M116 Sporting Life Near Set (282 Different) plus 23 of 24 Blue Variations $36,100 (1 bid)

Edited to correct typos.

Posted By: Anonymous
When it comes to auction house items I have tried both ways, waiting until the last moment and then bidding so I can bid in the 30 minute window, and I have put my max in early securing my "sweet spot" for the item. I am not sure which is better, but I have found that waiting often causes me more money, The item I usually want has the sweet spot already taken and I have to go higher if I want the item. Now, I dont know if the other person would go higher had I secured that max bid spot or not.
Talking to some regular bidders they tell me that they bid once early so they can get into the 30 minute bidding and just sit back and let the item go after their intial bid.

Posted By: Cat
I'm in a pretty foul mood right now... made my last bid on the T204 Ramly Walter Johnson. It was sitting at $9,663 last night and when I log in this morning, it's at $11,693. I bid twice and I am STILL the underbidder. I bid the first time thinking: "well I'll bid once because that is as high as I will go, even if the auction still has two days." Then I bid again with the same thought. But, I'm done now. Somebody else can have it. It's sitting at $17,122 right now and I think it will go a little further. I tried but I suspect I am up against one of the big boys. I bid and the proxy went up. I bid again and AGAIN the proxy overbid me.

The MatroNet auction was my proverbial Christmas and I'm getting a lump of coal in my stocking.

Posted By: Bryan Long
I have come to the conclusion that I will never win anything in Mastro - possibly ever. I just simply do not have the funds to buy the stuff. I even tried to go in with someone on a lot and our bid lasted a whole 25 minutes. I have great admiration to those who can afford to buy these lots.

My website: http://photobucket.com/albums/b45/trib01/
I am always looking for Walter Johnson cards. Buying or trading for T206 Johnson and Mathewson portraits.
