Posted By: Gertie
Looking for anything on Max Marshall's Baseball career..know he played in Columbus (White Sox's ?) and the St Louis Cardinals (Cardinals in 1941), I believe with DIzzy Dean... Also the Pacific Coast League prior to majors...Oakland Acorns under then manager Casey Stengel..Anyone have any suggestions how to pursue...Max was my father, and he passed away at 80 in 1993...would like to add to my families scrapbooks...thanks...

Please see message August 16..with corrections...Max played 42,43,44 for Cinncinati Reds and then in Oakland 45-46-47 after the war..

Posted By: David Vargha
I just sold an almost complete set of W753 1941 St. Louis Cardinals Team Issue cards and he is not in that set. Your best bet may be to track down PCL collectors. The wealth of material seems to be on the West Coast and specifically, the Pacific Northwest and the Bay Area of California. Hollywood and San Diego had PCL teams, but the materials aren't as popular in SoCal since the major league teams seem to garner most of the fan/collector interest.

DavidVargha@hotmail.com

Posted By: David Vargha
Okay, I just looked in The Standard Catalog and apparently he is on the 1940 Hughes Frozen Confections Sacramento Solons set. He does not appear in any of the Signal Gasoline, Remar Bread or Smith's Oakland Oaks sets. He also is not in any of the Sunbeam bread Sacramento Solons sets or the 1937-38 Zeenuts. Best wishes on your endeavor!

DavidVargha@hotmail.com

Posted By: Gertie
Appreciate the infor regarding Pacific League...Living in the NW might make that easier track to take...I am surprised about your comment about the 1941 Cardinals as Dad had an all stars ring dated 1941 and with the Cardinal Insignia...Wonder what that was about...And he played with Pepper Martin...perhaps while in Columbus Ohio...my sister was nick named for him after she bit him and he bit her back!...

Posted By: andy
Max Marshall is the toughest card in the 47' Smith's Oakland Oaks set. Was limited in production. One of the true shortprints. I was told someone at Mark Macrae's show was asking $300 for his. If you come across it in any grade it may not be a bad idea to pick it up as it may not come around again right away.
Good luck,
andy

Posted By: gertie
I find that Dad (Max Marshall) must have played in the PCL before and after his major league stint...find that he was with the Cardinals in 1942, 43, 44..Any body have any more info I'd appreciate it...I did get response from the Mark (Pacific Coast League Historical Society)..which was helpful about Oakland Oaks

Posted By: gertie
Wanted to thank Andy for the info on the 1947 Smiths Max Marshall card asking price of $300 that he had heard of. And a big thanks to Glen V for alerting me to the ebay auction of the same issue that card...I got it for $178 so I'm pretty happy...and it's supposed to be in excellent condition....

Also I have a line on a distant shirt-tail relation that has 2 of the Cinncinati cards that are autographed so keep your fingers crossed on those as well. It's a good day in Mudville!

Posted By: gertie
Well guys as you probably are aware I was really mixed up about the teams my Dad, Max Marshall played with...he was with the Cinncinati Reds 42-43-44 and then evidently ending his playing in Oakland after the war in 45-46-47...OOPs....now based on this if anyone has info to share or any suggestions as to where I might do research I would appreciate your further responses to this novice researcher...(I did notice in some of the sites I found they have his name as Milo May Marshall rather than Milo Max Marshall...and some sites show he died incorrectly on the 6th of Sept rather than Sept 16, 1993....which incidently was 2 days before his 80th birthday)...anyway...thanks for your sharing...
