T206 Honus Wagner strip

Posted By: Bryan Long
Does anyone know who nows own the strip that has Honus and M. Brown and Young on it? I know that the card was given as a prize I think from Wal-Mart or something but whatever happen to it after that? Plus, does anyone know the history behind it? Who found it? How a strip mamaged to survive with the great Honus card on it? Just curious as I have not heard much news about it for some time now.

Posted By: Anonymous
I think Steve Verkman might have sold it at one time, not sure if it was before or after the promotion. As I recall, the strip was found in a home that Wagner used to own. One theory is that the tobacco company sent it to Wagner to try to get him to change his mind about blocking the card.

It's the absolute cornerstone of any t206 collection and you get Cy Young and Mordeci Brown to boot. Plus, it's one of a kind.

Jay

My place is full of valuable, worthless junk.

Posted By: DJ
$78K is way cheap (it seems) and this was of course 2002. Something tells me that it would sell for ten times that today with the way everything in the hobby has spun out of control.

At $78K, wouldn't you think of 'chopping' it up and selling the cards as singles?

Maybe sell the others, keep the Wagner and lower your investment. After all, Cy Young really wasn't that good. Heck, if I pitched 8000 innings, I'm sure I could produce 300+ losses too!*

Just thoughts (even though I would never chop it up...who do you think I am, Upperdeck?)

DJ

* kidding.
