T206 Cobb Bat On - Warning - Deceptive Listing

Posted By: Josh K.
Just wanted to alert anyone thinking about bidding on this card. I owned this card and sold it a few weeks ago to the person who is now selling it. The problem is that the new seller is not disclosing the fact that it has some paper loss on the back - instead, she/he is making it sound like a legit card to send in for a regrade.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=31718&item=5184069 845&rd=1

Add nomar5378 to the list, you have all the proof you need right here if you werent already turned off by his keywording in every auction and the fact he can have 75% of a card left and still say its nice for its age

Posted By: vetekbob
Thanks for the heads up on nomar. I saw that listing the other day and I was planning on emailing him and asking him for the measurements of the E90-1 cards he has up. If there were more people like gray out there, Ebay would be even better. It would be nice to be able to buy very nice legit un graded cards but this is just more evidence for me that unless I get a referral from the experienced collectors on here as to who to buy from I will stick with purchasing graded cards on ebay. Seeing this kind of stuff just makes a true collector sick.
They stab it with their steely knives but they just cant kill the beast.

Posted By: Josh K.
Finally, does anyone think that Janice6499 is a schill for seller Nomar5378. Here is a list of items Janice has bid on and/or won. Notice that all the cards that she has won are under $10. Keeps coming up short on anything of value, but has bid up all of nomar's cards.

http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?MfcISAPICommand=ViewBidItems&complet ed=1&userid=janice6499&all=1

Posted By: T206Collector
Now these cards are "very nice shape" and include two "very rare" Willetts variations. I contributed 15 of the cards in this lot in a sale a couple of weeks back. My scans were a lot closer and showed that they were quite beat up. Plus, the buyer asked me to rush the cards to the post office because they were for his/her son's birthday. I knew this to be untrue, but sent the cards expedited anyway. I guess I should've known. Obviously, it's his/her right to resell them... it's just being done in a deceptive fashion.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=86840&item=5203937 907&rd=1

Posted By: Joey
Well, the Cobb ended up in Duncan, SC. It was purchased by my dealer as a second chance offer from eBay. He had no idea until he got the card about the back damage. He traded it to a relative newbie just looking for any Cobb for a Steiner Soriano jersey. The guy that ended up with it was so happy that it will probably be tucked away in his collection for quite sometime.

Posted By: Anson
Without getting ourselves into trouble, would it be possible to put out a list of "sellers to watch out for"? Besides the obvious reprints and fakes that less-than-brilliant folks auction off, some of these situations frighten me.

With the Cobb auction, things that caught my attention were:

"$2,500 VG GAI 3" - Is GAI grading VGs at 3 now?

"I WAS ROBBED! THIS CARD SHOULD HAVE BEEN GRADED A 3" - Now knowing that it was bought from someone else, how were THEY robbed?

COBB IS A HALL OF FAMER (HOF) HALL OF FAME AND THE GREATEST PLAYER OF ALL TIME. YES, EVEN BETTER THAN RUTH!!! - cough *cough* gasp. Don't get me wrong, Cobb was the best of his time but this is a bold statement.

"This card was graded a Good 2 by GAI (Global Authentication Inc.) GAI along with PSA (Professional Sports Card Authenticator, BGS (Beckett Grading Service), and BVG (Beckett Vintage Grading) are by far the most respected and trusted brands in sports card grading. This card was graded by a professional card grader at GAI." Now BVG is a respected vintage grader?

It is odd that they left out a scan of the back. We all know that GAI usually doesn't grade something a 2 without having something quite obvious. The scan doesn't seem to look any worse than a 4. Red Flag

Caveat Emptor

Posted By: john/z28jd
That 80 card lot that t206collector pointed out is off by at least $8800 on his listed estimate. Most of the lot contains $5 fillers that are missing big chunks of the cards or are trimmed. I would say the breakup value of the lot is about $750 at the most and some of them would be hard to get rid of at any price. What do you do with 2 extra Tannehill cards that have been to a barber shop?

I cant imagine putting together a set so low grade that you would settle for 70% of a Jimmy Dygert card.

I believe this seller sold his morals on ebay last year and they got a good price because they were unused

Posted By: T206Collector
...this is where Nomar5378 got many of these cards:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=86841&item=5194379 121

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=86840&item=5198971 020

As you can see, my auction stated, "This is an off-grade lot with numerous and various condition problems, including, but not limited to, tearing, paper loss, tape, ink stains, creases, etc." and had much closer images of the fronts and images of the backs. These were some of the worst cards in my collection before I upgraded them. If a person pays more than $10 a card for them, they will surely be disappointed in most if not all of them.
Posted By: Markith
I don't know how someone could do this...I feel bad for the guy who wins Nomar's auction....I was going to email him and ask the condition of the cards and that I noticed his previous poor condition T206 lots purchased between $30-$100...I am new to collecting vintage cards but the number of people ripped off on ebay must be astounding.
