1955 Esskay Question

Posted By: James Feagin
At the foremost, I apologize if this post is inappropriate for the time period, however, this is the only board that I feel is knowledgable enough to answer this question. I have the opportunity to purchase 3 INTACT and complete 1955 Esskay Orioles boxes. Boxes are in NMT condition and contain Miranda, Coleman, and I think Waitkus. I don't know much about these cards, but that they're extremely rare cut. How much of a premium would you give a complete NMT box? My friend is selling me the lot for $300.

James

1955 Esskay Question

Posted By: hankron
According to my old Standard Catalog, the $300 is less than their combined book value when the cards are cut.

It will all depend on how rare it is to find the complete box (perhaps with 1970s Hostess and Twinkies its no great shakes to find a complete box). In general, the complete box is considered something special and will receive a large (sometimes multiple) price over the cut cards. So, considering book price (from my old book) is $450 Near Mint for the 3 cuts (total for three), $300 for the Near Mint boxes would seem a more than fair price.

1955 Esskay Question

Posted By: hankron
I'll add that the complete boxes usually are multiple times better looking, or at least more interesting, than the single cut out cards. The boxes are more than cards, they're conversation pieces.
