Football trophy question

Posted By: Alan Elefson
Hi-
I recently purchased the figure below at a local flea market. Am I correct in assuming it is the top of a trophy? If so, does anyone have a picture of the trophy they could share? Also, does anyone know approximately when the trophy was made? The figure is marked with what appears to be WB CO. Copyright USA on the back. Is this the Wilkes Barre Trophy Company? Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to provide.
Alan Elefson
aelefson@hotmail.com

Posted By: Mark
At first glance, I wanted to say it's a reproduction piece. We had a previous thread months ago about fake Napkin Rings, made to look like early 20th Century pieces. These were prevalent on ebay about a year ago. The item pictured below is one of these reproductions...

But after a closer look, I think yours has far greater detail and superior workmanship. I believe that the reproduction piece was modeled after yours, which appears original. I suppose this doesn't help to answer your question regarding the original trophy, but somebody apparently thought enough of it to copy it!

Posted By: Phil
It's definitely a trophy top piece. As you can see the bottom of the one leg has a threaded pattern where that piece would screw into a trophy. A couple of options would be available. Either this piece would be connected to a threaded rod that would be inside a typical trophy column then a base or it would screw directly into a wooden base.

The only thing that looks weird to me is that if it screwed directly into a base, then the player would only have one foot. I'm not aware of any type of base that would have a "foot" on it where you would screw the player into.

To me, it looks original, but don't have an idea of value. My guess would be maybe $100?

Posted By: Alan Elefson
Phil-
Thank you very much for your information and thoughts (the leg thing looks odd to me as well)! I will see if I can find anything out about the WB Company (unfortunately, the Wilkes Barre trophy company I mentioned in a previous post was founded in 1976).
Thanks,
Alan
