Perhaps it was used to promote cards (though I would think it oridinarilly have have some sort of advertising on it, unless is was a part of a larger display), or perhaps it was sold to customers. Especially in the 19th century, posters were were sold directly to the public, though they were usually of single teams. I'm sure others have noticed that there's Johnson and Mathewson, but no Cobb.
