If you could travel back to 5 events in baseball history, what would they be?

Could be a single game, an entire series, etc.

Mine would be the following:

1. 1909 World Series between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Detroit Tigers
2. Jackie Robinson debut
3. Sandy Koufax's Perfect Game
4. Lou Gehrig's "Luckiest Man on the Face of the Earth" speech
5. Opening of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939

1 Far and away ( but I think it would be a major disappointment) with miked up audio and instant replay.. The Babes Called Shot

June 14, 1870: the Atlantics defeat the Red Stockings, ending Cincinnati's 81-game winning streak.

There are others, such as Ruth's "called shot" and the Merkle Boner" game. I suspect I'd meet a bunch of Net54 members there. Make sure to bring a t-shirt in the time machine, so we can all meet up afterwards. :)

Yes! The finale of one of the greatest playoff pitching performances in history.

1. 1919 World Series. I'd spend the entire series yelling at Risberg, Gandil, Cicotte, Williams and Felsch about their treachery.

2. 1912 World Series. Wood, Matty, Speaker, 8 games. Best series of the dead ball era.

3. Shot heard round the world. Right before Thomson hits it, I'd shout to everyone around me, "Watch this!"

4. 1955 World Series. It would be fun to see the long-suffering Brooklyn fans delirious, knowing 2 years later their team would be gone forever.

5. 1941 All Star Game. The final inning, featuring Ted's monster game-winning home run, and his dancing around the bases, would be so classic to witness.

1 October 10, 1926, Yankee Stadium, Game 7 of 1926 World Series, Alexander fans Lazzeri and gets save, Hornsby tags out Ruth for final out.

2 July 4, 1939, Yankee Stadium, Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day

3 October 10, 1924, Griffith Stadium, Game 7, 1924 World Series, Johnson pitches last 4 innings in relief, gets win in 12th inning to win the Series.

4 September 29, 1954, Indians at the Giants, World Series Game 1, Mays' catch, Dusty Rhodes' pinch hit 3 run walk off home run.

5 September 23, 1908, Cubs at the Giants, Merkle runs to clubhouse instead of 2nd base.

I used to have different answers to this question, which means I've thought about it multiple times. I was picking specific games, such as watching John Ward and Larry Corcoran battle to a 16-inning 1-1 tie, or Lee Richmond's perfect game. I'd love to see Paul Hines turn the unassisted triple play, because from everything I've read and thinking about the specifics of how the play went down, I believe he did it. There are those who don't believe it happened based on a later account of the game, but more sources say he did it, plus the other explanation seems to have a major hole. Anyway...

Now my answer would be to have someone pick it for me based on criteria I set forth. I'd do that so I don't know what was going to happen in the game. I'd know it would be something exciting, but I wouldn't know exactly what would happen. I think it would make the game more enjoyable.

Almost every pick would be 19th century, starting with going back to seeing Jim Creighton play, but not his final game. I'd see an old Alleghenys/Pirates game. I'd also like to see Walter Johnson pitch against Babe Ruth.

EDIT...I knew I was forgetting a game I'd love to have been at and it bugged me that I couldn't put my finger on it when I was originally posting. I remember getting home from school in time to watch the last few innings of Game 7 of the Series in 1960 with my mom. I was a wild game even before Maz's game-winner. The nuns at St. Mary's in Nutley always rolled out the TVs for World Series games. We'd hustle to get the bus and get home to catch the end if a game if we were lucky.

I'd sneak onto the field and sort of box out and block shutterbug Nathaniel Fein, and then snap pictures of Babe Ruth leaning on his bat, and immediately take the film to one of the numerous NYC papers and tell them, "Trust me, print the best of these shots. You'll thank me later."

Of course, the downside is I'd be forced to live in the past for quite awhile as I await the presentation of my Pulitzer Prize. Guess that's the price you pay.

Let's hear the story about that picture Frank...

May 30, 1894 - Bobby Lowe's (4) HR performance. It was said after his second HR fans were throwing coins for him. True meaning of a FANatic for the game.

October 8, 1908 - Game between Giants and Cubs to determine the league championship. The game was played because of Merkle's boner. Accounts indicate it was a crazy scene at Coogan's Bluff.

Any game in the early 20th century that would have had HOFers pitching against each other. Would really liked to have seen a Joss and Johnson matchup.

May 25, 1935 - Watch Ruth hit his final HR (actually three that day)

Any game in the summer of 1976 that Mark Fidrych started - I remember watching him pitch on TV. It was so different to see someone grooming the mound and talking to the ball.

In no particular order

-Satchel Paige's 3 hit shutout in front of 78,382 people in August of 1948. Cleveland forth shutout in a row. It must've been rocking.

-Monte Irvin putting on a show in the 1951 Game 1 of the World Series. 4 for 5 with a triple, steals home and robs Hank Bauer of a home run.

-Randy Johnson's perfect game at 40 years old

-Clemente's 3,000th

-Ichiro hits 258

Only one person listed Larson’s perfect game. To me, that’s probably #1. I am shocked how little it’s mentioned. A close second would be Babe’s called shot

Two of the best pitchers of their era, and the 2 leading ERAs of all-time, battling each other in a game that actually had some playoff importance to Cleveland.

-Washington National Club suffers only loss on western trip of 1867 -- late July in Chicago to Forest City (and Albert Spalding, 29-23).
-Opening day in Washington in 1901 as the Kansas City Blues become the Washington Senators and part of the American League.
-Opening day in Washington in 1912 as Clark Griffith takes over as manager.
-Game 7 of the 1924 World Series (hopefully with seats near Hank).
-Game 3 of the 1925 World Series (hopefully with seats near Val).

1 - Ruth's called shot in the '32 Series. The most speculated about moment in baseball history. I NEED TO KNOW!
2 - Larson's Perfecto in the '56 Series.
3 - May 26, 1959 Braves vs. Pirates. Harvey Haddix pitches a 12 inning Perfect Game and somehow loses. The tension building throughout that game must have been unbearable!
4 - Game 7 of the 2001 World Series. I'd sit near the Yankee dugout and SCREAM to Joe Torre not to move his infield in.
5 - My son's MLB debut. No, this hasn't happened yet but I'm bending the rules just a bit :D

1. Game 6 of the 2013 World Series - oh wait, I was at that one.

2. Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS - oh wait, I was at that one.

3. Game 6 of the 1975 World Series.

4. Game 7 of the 1955 World Series.

5. That All Star game where Ted Williams hit the dinger of the Rip Sewell Eephus pitch.

1) Nap Lajoie hitting for the cycle with a grand slam on July 30, 1901 in the inaugural year of American League when he won the triple crown and hit .426
2) Oscar Charleston facing Walter Johnson in an exhibition game (date unknown)
3) Babe Ruth's called shot Oct. 1, 1932 in Game 3 of Wor Series at Wrigley Field.
4) Josh Gibson's legendary 600-foot home run that reached the backyard of the Belmar Post office in Belmar, NJ on July 24, 1936.
5) Mets vs. Red Sox in game 6 of World Series on October 26, 1996.



Honorable Mentions:
1) Christy Mathewson gets 3rd shutout in Game 5 to close out World Series vs. Charles "Chief" Bender and the Philadelphia Athletics on October 14th, 1905.
2) Addie Joss' perfect game on Oct. 2 1908 when he outdueled Ed Walsh.
3) Grover Cleveland Alexander's strikeout of Tony Lazzeri with bases loaded and two outs in 7th game of 1926 World Series.
4) Jackie Robinson's first game with Dodgers
5) Game in which Willie Mays caught a ball off Bobby Morgan at Ebbets Field in Sept. '51 in which he dove parallel in the air, hit the wall and knocked himself out. Upon awakening he saw Leo Durocher (who was checking on Mays' health) and Jackie Robinson who had come all the way from the dugout. Mays said that was his best catch ever.

Only a couple that haven't been already mentioned:
1. Sandy Amoros terrific catch off a Yogi Berry sliced fly ball to left, which saved the Dodgers WS victory in '55.
2. Any game when Jackie Robinson steals home.
3. The incident when a sliding Ty Cobb purportedly sliced up Frank Baker with his spikes.
4. On the pathos side, maybe when Gil McDougal's line drive hit Herb Score in the eye.

It's surprising how so many people mentioned perfect games, no-hitters and pitching duels. Although it would be great to say you were there for a historic accomplishment, to me it means missing out on a huge part of a game, seeing those old time players smashing the ball. Different strokes, I guess.
