Baltimore News Ruth in REA

Apparently REA has an SGC 3 Baltimore News Ruth in their upcoming auction. Any predictions for the final price?

Hankphenom 11-06-2023 11:22 AM

10m

Just saw it it is a beauty.

Here is a picture from the email.

They claim 1 of 10

I say $15 million

I believe this was Leon card but that is only a unsubstantiated rumor

Lucas00 11-06-2023 11:37 AM

Piggybacking off Jeffrey,
Quality should be a bit better directly from the site here.
By the way, Opening bid is 2.5M.

At least 7 dollars :)

STL1944 11-06-2023 11:52 AM

No offense...

... but how did that pull an SGC 3 grade?

I can confirm it was never mine (maybe in a dream). Great card, sucks not to have the resources to buy it. :)

I owned a common from the series, at one time. That is about as close as I will ever get.

Reholder or favored submitter.

ullmandds 11-06-2023 12:02 PM

11.7 mill is my guess

darwinbulldog 11-06-2023 12:04 PM

$9.6 million including the buyer's premium

packs 11-06-2023 12:09 PM

My guess: 8.5 before juice

brunswickreeves 11-06-2023 12:18 PM

I guess $14.5MM.

Leon, please start a Net54 Go Fund Me for fractional ownership! :)

I think this will surpass the $12.6MM 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle SGC 9.5 ‘Finest Example Known’. And in the not far distant future, 1 of the 3 PSA 10 1952 Topps Micks will hit the auction block for $30MM, to then surpass this Ruth Rookie.

slightlyrounded 11-06-2023 12:27 PM

Maybe '3 VG' stands for 3 very good corners?

Looks like this was the Collectable.com card valued at $8.83mm when partially re-purchased by the owner in 2021? Unless I'm missing something.

Dream card. I’ll go with a $4.3mm value, economy and rates being where they are.

fkm_bky 11-06-2023 12:36 PM

That's a 2, or 1.5 all day...but in the end with it being such a rare and amazing card, it's somewhat irrelevant (at least to me).

I'll go $13.7M after the juice is applied.

Bill

Schlesinj 11-06-2023 12:46 PM

I believe this was the card that was fractionalized.

Not according to this write-up https://robertedwardauctions.com/baltimore-news-ruth

Edited to add: I take it back...it does look like the same card...sorry!

Jewish-collector 11-06-2023 01:37 PM

This used to be the card that was on display all those years at the Babe Ruth Museum in Baltimore.

BobbyStrawberry 11-06-2023 01:53 PM

Incredible card, but yeah, that's laughable that it's graded a 3.

oldjudge 11-06-2023 02:09 PM

I believe that is the Babe Ruth Museum card. I think that one sold for ballpark $5 million so it will be interesting to see how much it has appreciated. Good luck to the seller!

Republicaninmass 11-06-2023 02:17 PM

The top has arrived!

Mark this

parkplace33 11-06-2023 02:17 PM

8-10 million.

Casey2296 11-06-2023 02:29 PM

Great card, excited to see the results. My guess is 15-18 million w/bp.

What precisely is the implication of what you said?

I think it has a good chance of passing the 12.6 mark too! It could play out this way. Personally, I’d much rather have this card than all 3 psa10 Mantle copies combined, but I’m in the minority I guess lol. This card is the ultimate grail of grails. Should be interesting and should be good headlines for the hobby! These never come for sale, only 10 known copies!

oldjudge 11-06-2023 03:22 PM

My only question is if someone is willing to pay $10 million now why wouldn’t they have approached the Babe Ruth Museum when the card was available for a lot less. Amongst people in the know I doubt it was a mystery that the card was available.

when was it available for less? this card was on loan at the babe ruth museum since the late 90's when I was there.

Jewish-collector 11-06-2023 03:31 PM

Here's more of the story...

raulus 11-06-2023 03:43 PM

I guess the current owners decided they're ready to cash out now that they expect 8 figures.

In terms of price, how many rich guys are out there and willing to go nuts over this one?

All it takes are 2!

Since we're having fun throwing out wild guesses, I might as well go hog wild and guess that we'll get to $20M on this one, including the juice. There's just enough guys in the cardboard world with 9 figure bank accounts who are willing to part with a slice of their cash to pick this one up for a while.

When the consignor bought it

Carter08 11-06-2023 03:49 PM

Incredible card. If I had the money (in my dreams) would be a tough call between that or a game worn Ruth jersey. Probably similar pricing.

Jstottlemire1 11-06-2023 04:18 PM

Opening bid is 2.5 million. I see 10-12 million range.

Many, very many.. If I had that kind of money I would definitely be in the running..

Natswin2019 11-06-2023 05:33 PM

I think this breaks the record but idk how much. Id guess between 12-15 mil probably

familytoad 11-06-2023 08:59 PM

15 large

I think it will go for 15M before BP.
It’s about the best combo of player/ rare card out there

Gary Dunaier 11-06-2023 09:16 PM

I'll buy it!

I can pay cash... :D

I hope it sells for more than that "Trout" Rookie?

Peter_Spaeth 11-07-2023 10:57 AM

Not when they are giving NM/MT cards 4s.

Great movie. ;)

(Insanely awesome Ruth. Congrats to Brian, Joe and team for landing it).

bleeckerstreetcards 11-07-2023 02:18 PM

i think bidders will partner up and hold it back from breaking mantle record. guess is $10.2mm

bcbgcbrcb 11-07-2023 02:22 PM

I tried to buy the card from the museum a number of years ago. Obviously, they turned me down. 😢

Because they already have one…or two?

HercDriver 11-07-2023 08:07 PM

Skeds

I'd hate to be a schedule collector, and need this one for my list...

LincolnVT 11-07-2023 08:11 PM

Ruth

Becomes the largest sale for a baseball card ever…someone adds it to their already superior collection…maybe sells it privately in a year or five for other real property and the rest of us keep doing what we do. 😊

CW 11-07-2023 08:15 PM

Every example I have seen from this "set" has had slightly rounded corners, but they've also shown other signs of wear, so it's hard to tell how the corners started out in 1914.

Does anyone know if these cards were issued with the corners already rounded, or were they perfectly square when new?

If they started out already a bit rounded, then the SGC grade is not too crazy, since the central image is pretty clean and crease free, despite the chipping and creasing in the edge areas.
