Thursday Trivia: The hot corner

Trivia Time!

Name the three players in MLB history who scored the most runs in a season while appearing in at least 50 games at third base in that same season.

Or, put another way:

On the all-time list of most runs scored in a single season by any player (not just the most by any player in a particular season), which are the top three accomplished by players who played at least 50 games at 3B in the year they scored all those runs?

I'm going with A-Rod, Mike Schmidt, and Chipper Jones

Good guesses but these are not the guys.

Peter_Spaeth 10-26-2023 11:06 AM

Ott?

Peter_Spaeth 10-26-2023 11:06 AM

Rose?

BobbyStrawberry 10-26-2023 12:07 PM

Ott, Rose also incorrect.

cgjackson222 10-26-2023 12:34 PM

Eddie Mathews, Boggs, or Adrian Beltre?

Peter_Spaeth 10-26-2023 12:51 PM

Brett? Ripken? Miggy?

BobbyStrawberry 10-26-2023 12:56 PM

Solid guesses but none of the three have been named yet.

Hint #1: All three happened Pre-WWII.

Peter_Spaeth 10-26-2023 12:58 PM

Pie Traynor. Frankie Frisch. Bob Johnson. George Kell.

Boggs didn't lead the majors in Runs in 1988 or '89?

He did - I just realized my wording of the question left some ambiguity, so apologies if it was misunderstood. What I am looking for is - phrased in a different way:

On the all-time list of most runs scored in a single season by any player (not just the most by any player in a particular season), which are the top three accomplished by players who played at least 50 games at 3B in the year they scored all those runs.

I hope that's clearer....?

No for these guys too. See my clarified post above if the initial question wasn't clear.

Hint #2: Two of the three players appear in the T206 set.

Peter_Spaeth 10-26-2023 02:57 PM

Most runs in a season during the deadball era, well that is surprising. Home Run Baker. George Davis. John McGraw.

McGraw is correct! He is #2. He scored 156 runs with Baltimore in 1894. Still looking for the others...

Peter_Spaeth 10-26-2023 03:42 PM

Did Hornsby ever play third?

BobbyStrawberry 10-26-2023 04:35 PM

He did, but not in the seasons where he scored the most runs.

Peter_Spaeth 10-26-2023 06:33 PM

Did Foxx play third?

His high for runs scored was 151 in 1932 but he only played 13 games at third that year.

Hint #3:

Of the two remaining answers, one accomplished this before McGraw's season (pre-1894) and the other after (post-1900).

Harland Clift?

Clift is not one of the two I am looking for.

Hint #4: One of these guys did it for a team that lost in the world series. The other's team did not even win the pennant.

cgjackson222 10-28-2023 02:06 PM

I have no idea. Who are the answers?

BobbyStrawberry 10-28-2023 03:49 PM

the two remaining answers

#1 is Arlie Latham. He scored 163 runs for the St. Louis Browns in 1887. I'm surprised nobody guessed this one.

#3 I wouldn't have guessed myself - it's Woody English, who scored 152 runs for the Cubs in 1930.

(Latham also scored 152 in 1886, the year the Browns won the world series.)
