Bust Out Your Tuxedos!! SGC Graded Card Reveal
12 Attachment(s)
Any folks here interested in sharing your returned graded card submissions, particularly from SGC? If so, show us what you got! I know many here view SGC & PSA as the most respected TPGs, cost and grading delays notwithstanding.
Recently, I sent in a large number of cards of various age and condition; a couple were really rough, and I expected grades of “1” but just wanted them slabbed. Others were newer and nicer. The content crossed several sports. Was interested to see if they still grade in a manner consistent with the past two decades, given that I have not sent in an order since the start of the pandemic. For many years, I’ve sent in cards of all types to be graded and gotten very used to the standards. In short, I’d have to agree with what many have been stating: grading has become slightly more strict. It seems less about eye appeal and more about technicalities, which is fine, as long as there is consistency. Here are a dozen images from my order being returned. Given that SGC now scans all items (hi-rez, no additional charge), I have a clear picture of each item. Overall, love SGC’s service and holder, but have to agree they are tougher than ever… what does a dude need to do to get a 1.5 LOL! The service was fast and I’m still a satisfied customer, though I’d love a lower cost bulk submission level and a set registry! Feel free to share your ‘returns’ here. Note: 20-25 day service @ $30 each Submitted online order & shipped: 2/9/22 Delivered to SGC by USPS: 2/14/22 Received by SGC: 2/15/22 Grades Popped: 3/1/22 Shipped back: 3/2/22 |

Looks like SGC has gotten .5 happy.

I thought it would grade higher, but I'm still happy with it!

SGC is definitely tougher than PSA on grading, both pre-war & post-war. Recent returns form SGC, I wouldn't say they are unfair on the pre-war but can't see how the two post war didn't go higher.

Hey, thanks, Joe! Here's the back, just as clean as the front. I'm really thinking about keeping this one in my collection, but if the price is right, well you know!

I got these off of the BST from someone that had gotten back their submission and been disappointed in the results.

If getting under graded cards is what floats one's boat, great. PSA, might be able to get away with it because they own the market but SGC cannot. And I keep seeing an overwhelming number of examples from SGC that seem at least a full grade lower than what the card seems to be. |

Just got grades back for a small stack of cards from my very first submission to SGC. Received March 15th and on their way back today April 1st (assuming it's not an April Fool's joke). Standard submission. Way faster then anybody else I've sent to. About 3 months quicker then PSA's "Express" service around this time last year.
Seem to grade tobacco's pretty fairly, but a bit tougher on 50's-60's stuff it looks like. |

Grades popped for my most recent sub yesterday. I was pleased that they graded my E92 blank back (after I heard that they dont grade them any longer) as well as my S74-1 silk, which was a second try with this one (originally SGC deemed it too fragile, as the paper backing had peeled about halfway off. This time, I placed a post-it note on the card saver that said "AUTHENTIC OK", and surprisingly it worked!) They were tough on the rest of the group, as my Cobb and Matty both came back with lower grades than they were, originally (I had cracked them for a binder set that I gave up on). The Chase one ear is a head scratcher for me. Not sure why it got an A? https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...4d67f7c0fb.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...3a2cad0ee6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...62d5fa9482.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...19a0e03b2b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...21a5365052.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...43a12d607d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...157ae0039d.jpgAttachment 509949Attachment 509950Attachment 509951Attachment 509952Attachment 509953Attachment 1Attachment 509954

These are about what I expected. Dimaggio, sharp looking but obviously trimmed. The Williams marked as "Authentic - Altered"
Not sure what's "Altered" about it, but it's got a gouge on the left border, so I wasn't expecting any more then a "1" on it anyways. Maybe it was pressed at one point. |
I just submitted 6 more cards, and received 3 back couple weeks ago.
First was this 1954 Bowman Mickey...was popped from a PSA 2 MC...SGC hammered it say "Evidence of Trimming"? I really don't care as it presents well for a MC card, but I really don't agree with trimming, and neither did PSA - https://i.ibb.co/MNVy4xm/54-Mick-SGC.jpg https://i.ibb.co/txVm9sR/54-Mick-PSA.jpg Also was hoping for a 4 here, and it came back 3.5. No creases, corners not bad...hammered for the OC. https://i.ibb.co/SRCt1TM/1967-Seaver.jpg Lastly I was super pumped for this one...I have never subbed a new shiney card and frankly don't collect much new stuff. Being in Seattle and a die hard Mariners fan (suffering I know) I am setting to get a slabbed card of each of the new 2022 roster players. I picked this card out of many hoping to get a 10...and I did, first ever try. Beginners luck... https://i.ibb.co/txNTFnc/Logan-SGC.jpg |

Damn, that's a spectacular 53 Bowman Mantle. Can't decide if the 53 Topps Mantle or the 53 Bowman Mantle is my favorite Mantle card of All-time.

I have to wonder if the batch of new graders have been 'overtrained' and how much hands-on supervision they receive at the workplace?
When SGC first started out in the mid '90s, I doubt centering was even one of their grading criteria. They were notorious for giving juicy grades to cards way o/c. |

Just back from Grading at SGC. Only took 2 weeks from the time they received them! That said, I'm disappointed in the Chesbro grade, and I re-sent the Collins back to have them holder for Authentic b/c they refused to grade it last time...now it comes back in a 1. No consistency really...even if it comes out in my favor. Not happy they stole my $30.00.

Hi Bill. Nice cards! Just my opinion of course, but all of those grades given by Sgc look pretty accurate to me.
And who says they got the Collins right the first time you'd sent it in. I've seen many 1's in both Psa and Sgc slabs that display like that Collins. Those are my thoughts at first glance. |

BTW, looked at your Portrait collection and my jaw dropped. What a great array of cards, just beautiful! Slowly I hope to upgrade mine as things go along. Bill |
