Perez-Steele Postcards

Total novice question so bear with me. Were the Perez Steele auto postcards all signed on site at the HOF? If there were annual signings does it lend a little credibility to ungraded autos. I do realize graded/slabbed would be the best decider of authenticity, just wanted some background on how or when each series of postcards received their sigs.

I love the art, The Postcards seem like a great value, plan on collecting signed and unsigned after i round up all different years of Donruss DK cards.

Thanks,
Tom

The postcards were issued in series, starting with the first HOF class and moving forward. The last several series usually included two years of inductees in each release. There were 4 different issues released, including Postcards, Celebration, Great Moments (larger sized) and Master Works.

As far as I know, there was not a concerted effort to have the postcards signed at the HOF. Most, if not all, were sold to collectors straight from PS Galleries on a pseudo-subscription basis. I ended up buying the last five or six series directly from PS, and the older ones generally on a one-at-a-time basis.

Personally, I think the artwork is top notch, and like that the cards are limited edition, unlike baseballs and photos. Also, I think in general, the PS cards were not forged in the same numbers as other mediums.

And, if you want to be complete you need the Donruss puzzles too.

And maybe he dealer only plaques which were the puzzle images and only went to dealers who ordered the cards.

I bought my postcards directly from the hall of fame unsigned. Most shops around town in Cooperstown had them autographed and for sale.

Here's a pretty good article on the PSA website. Not totally comprehensive but a good read. Bottom line, whether you buy slabbed or raw, make sure you know if it was possible for the person to have signed the card. Only about 104 could have possibly signed, and of those there are a handful that had a very small window before they died.

I was one of the initial subscribers to the original postcards, and got all of them through Perez-Steele Galleries.

The first six series contained 30 cards each, and were released in 1980 & 1981. The later series were issued every two-three years, beginning in 1983, and finishing in 2001. In total, 15 series of cards were issued.

Some of the cards were also available from the Hall of Fame itself, but I don't know of any that were issued autographed. As far as I know, it was entirely up to each collector to get any of them autographed.

I was fortunate to get the Richie Ashburn signed as he had a very short window between issue and his death. I was heavy into P-S issues at the time and sent his to him not long after I received it.
