Wonderful newsreel footage (with sound!) of Opening Day at Yankee Stadium, 1934
Forgive me if this has been posted here, but I can’t find it...This is amazing, goosebump-quality stuff for pre-war baseball fans:

I've never seen this before and it is awesome. Thanks a lot for sharing this video man.

Awesome!
Wow! Incredible! I was amazed at how Ruth and Foxx were so patient before the game with the photographers and reporters. You expected them to bolt at any minute but they kept their cool.
Really fascinating footage! Thanks! Mike |
Three things:
1. Man, those teams really could've used some tailors!! 2. Strange how The Yankees home dugout was on the third base side. 3. With all of those hitches in his swing, how in heck did Jimmie Foxx become such an all time great???? |
Very cool to see how different the ballplayers were from today. The NY mayor there was 5’2” Fiorello La Guardia who didn’t seem like the brightest fellow. Thanks for posting this.

Great footage, thanks for posting.
In similar footage we've seen over the years, it is amazing how many hitches there are in swings and throwing back then. I think form and execution have been finessed over the decades. Also, as previously discussed, it's fascinating to see how people react in front of a "moving image" camera. Since it was a fairly new medium, people are awkward and don't know how to act, or what to say, since they were mostly used to posing for still shots. People since then have grown up with knowing how to act in front of cameras, and thus it feels more fluid and natural in the decades since the 20's/30's... |
I thought Gehrig was safe at second.

It's videos like this that make YouTube my favorite thing on the Internet. Thanks for posting. I pay a small fee to YouTube each month to ditch the ads. Besides great videos like this, you can listen to actual broadcasts of games from the 1950s and 1960s, and there's tons available. Just search for the YouTube page "Classic Baseball on the Radio." Sometimes I let the broadcasts play in the background for hours when I'm home.

Yankee uniforms
wow....one can really tell its early in the season as the Yankee uniforms are still starched and white.
Love this footage! |

Great videos. Thanks for posting them. They are always fun to watch how it used to be. The awkwardness of the players behind the mics is great.
