timing of 1933 Goudey issue
 

I found this interesting, although for all I know it's common knowledge. I was looking at the back of #240 Hal Schumacher and noticed that it refers to his complete game victory for the Giants against Washington in the 1933 Series (October 4). Then I realized that #230-240 of the set are all Giants, and several of them refer to the 1933 World Series. The back of #236 Davis calls it a 5-game series so it's obviously over. That means that at least the highest numbers of the set were issued AFTER the end of the season, presumably several weeks later.

- does anybody know how late the 1933 set was issued?

- Was the set originally planned to be 230 cards, and were the last ten numbers #230-240 a kind of World Series update to the set? If so, it seems like they would be much scarcer than the rest.

Tim, there are 10 sheets of 24 cards each in the 1933 Goudey Set. The last sheet was printed just after the World Series was over.

The 24 cards are comprised of 12 from Washington and 12 from the Giants. Card numbers are 107-114, 121-127, and 232-240.

Tim, here is a link to an article I posted about longtime collector Elwood Scharf's memories of collecting the 1933 Goudey set as a kid, including the timing of each of the 10 series of 24. The first seven series (167 cards, with the "Big League Chewing Gum" banner along the bottom) were distributed by early July, then the eighth series (#190-213) came out in mid-August, and the ninth series came out in September. The last series consisted of 12 cards each from the two 1933 pennant winners (Giants and Senators), with text on the back reflecting their World Series performance, and came out at the end of October. This last series did not include the last 24 numbers, as you might expect; as was often done in those days, Goudey did not number the cards in each series consecutively, so the Giants in the last series were #125-127 and 232-240, and the Senators were #107-114 and 121-124.

Edited to add: I see that pro9 added the info about the card numbers while I was writing my reply.

One would think that the last issue would be tougher to come by, since it couldn't have been in stores until late October or early November at the earliest, and collector interest should have died down by then. But I have never noticed that these cards are more than perhaps just slightly less common than cards from the rest of the series, or that pricing is higher for them.

The bios reflect the 1933 World Series between the NY Giants and Washington. From my Goudey set, I have arranged these cards to exactly
simulate this 24-card sheet..........

the whole idea/info/data of when the last series were printed is interesting

I recall the 69T Mantle mentions " he aint coming back " LOL

the 67T Pearsall saying " he retired on ...."

other cards listing a player release date, etc..
