Forgot about that card and thread. Weren't some saying over a half million or higher? Looks like it will have no trouble reaching that.

Dale- Yes, my estimate was north of $500K and this card isn't even centered 50/50!

I remember that being discussed and I remember posting a link/info from PSA that read slight off centering is allowed.

It was surprising to me, as well as others, but I remember, that's what it read.

I jokingly told a buddy the other day that card might top $1m!!!

Now that doesn't seem like such a joke anymore!

Nick- Probably not, but who knows? Makes you wonder what a PSA 10 Mantle would bring....

yeah it probably won't hit $1m but $750k isn't out of the question.

PSA 10 Mantle? Man.... I bet that would give $2m a run for it's money if the Mays can go over $600k right? It's probably 3 times as desired by the elite collectors.

this has always been my favorite card. Being in SF and living close to Mays solidified my fondness for this issue. I'll throw my hat in the ring and suggest some techie pays over $1m for this card.

Someone over at PSA just established the provenance for it. A cool read.

Agree, John, it is a classic card. It's one of the few cards to show Mays in a fielding pose.

My PSA 5 is nowhere near the quality of the PSA 10, but this was one of those cards that, upon receipt, was totally satisfying. Some cards you just never need to upgrade -- cross it off the wantlist and you're done. The winner of the PSA 10 will probably do the same.

Beautiful PSA 5 Mays........I'd be happy with that one. No need to upgrade

Thanks, Bill. :)

If this Mays sells for close to $1M and a 53 Mantle PSA10 would sell for $2M, what would be the price of a 52 Topps Mantle PSA 10? I believe there were 4 of them from that Mr. Mint find years ago. I'd take a T206 Wagner in any condition over any of these cards, but I guess that's just me.

Beastmode 08-27-2016 03:07 PM

Few hours until closing....then wait multiple more closings.....then stay up all night....then bid again....then more extended bidding....then it sells to someone in NY for $1.1M

pokerplyr80 08-27-2016 04:43 PM

Looks like it might not sell it all. Reserve has not been met.

cardcountry 08-27-2016 05:36 PM

I'd personally much rather have the 56 Mantle psa 10. At 1/2 the price it kind of seems like a "deal".

At least the Mantle is perfectly centered.

May not sell but way too early to tell.

fair argument. What's amazing is that the 56 Topps was Mick's 6th year pro card. Quite a handsome price.....

cardcountry 08-27-2016 06:28 PM

It's only 3rd Topps card though, and it's his triple crown year. Without question I sell more 56 Mantles than any other year. I used to ask guys why and that's what they told me.

I think it's his most aesthetically pleasing card, but I'm biased because my father gave me one for Christmas in 1989. Can't name many other Christmas gifts from my childhood.

pokerplyr80 08-27-2016 07:55 PM

I agree with Jeff, the 56 Mantle seems like a bargain if it doesn't go higher. I figured it would be in the same range as the Rose and Ryan. One of Mantle's best looking cards in my opinion, and still under valued in most grades.

BBB 08-28-2016 08:53 PM

I think it's total bull shit that they set the reserve at over half a mil for the 10 mays. Feels like it was put up for PR more than a serious sales attempt.

56 mantle 10 is a pop 4 I believe. That's one of the reasons why it didn't sell as high as the pop 1 Ryan and rose rookies.
