Just So Tobacco Cards

1 Attachment(s)
I'm not sure how many members of this board are on Facebook, but David Levin posted pictures this week of some newly discovered Just So Tobacco cards (not new players), including Jesse Burkett. Prior to this, the Burkett that I had restored and later sold (quite a few years ago) was the only known example. I'm hoping that either David is on this board, or that another board member may know the story behind this discovery. I personally (and I'm sure others) would love to know the details.

Saw it on Facebook

but the first time i saw them they were already sold.

Andy Baran 05-27-2016 10:45 AM

Facebook

You are correct. I believe that David posted them after he had already sold them.

BobbyVCP 05-27-2016 12:22 PM

David has his select clientele that he goes to first on any new discovery. Only if they pass does he then offer it elsewhere.

Fantastic cards...........saw them on FB too and wondered their origin...........

Anyone care to speculate on what the Burkett sold for?

I would speculate $41,350 .......but I could be off a little as I have no real clue.....:) But all in all probably not a bad guess.

Andy Baran 05-29-2016 10:03 AM

Speculation

I was going to say $40K+, so Leon and I are not far off in our guess.

Yes, it is/was an exciting find. First, I will thank David Cicotello, he spotted a listing on facebook. A family in Windber Pa, which has a small Museum and a farm house that has been in the family for generations since the late 19th century owned these cards. Patricia Shaffer and her family owned these cards and apparently they were in the basement in an old box of Heirlooms for many years, originally came to the family from some in-laws many years ago. I am going by memory from our conversations and asked her to write it down and send it to me. They found these and she put a post up on facebook and David commented on it and then asked me what info I could shed on them, but gave me limited information. I decided to do a search on facebook for Burkett, and found the listing, I then searched for the museum and found some info on it with several phone numbers and finally got in touch with Patricia, the owner.
We talked briefly about the cards, they had no idea how rare they were or what they could possibly be worth and said they did not plan on selling them.... until I mentioned what I thought I could get them for the cards. Patricia and her husband are an elderly couple and told me that the money could not have come at a better time, so every one involved in this deal was very excited and happy.

Thanks again for David for assuring them that the cards would safe and well placed if they used me, she finally send the two cards out last week, I send them to SGC, they Went into graded holders, Burkett sgc50, Davies SGC40 and got shipped off to their new home.

We all dream of a find like this. But I wonder how many we come close to but just miss. Just awesome.

Just So Tobacco Cards

You can say that again, Eric.

Simply an incredible find. And a bargain if the Burkett only brought in the 40K range. I know someone who paid that much for a W600 Burkett.

Yeah 40k sounds too low
Incredible find
Maybe there's another Cy out there waiting to be found

e107collector 05-29-2016 07:53 PM

Great find!! I love hearing about new discoveries/finds like this.

It would be great if a new Just So Cy Young in out there somewhere. Odds are there probably is.

My hunch is that it sold for 62.5 after negotiation. Cy Young would be a great find and would be nice to see it in an auction.

62.5 is entirely possible and wouldn't surprise me. A hundred k at auction wouldn't surprise me....We all know a few folks who would have been interested in bidding.

quinnsryche 05-29-2016 09:19 PM

Really?

Amazing how the words "bargain" and "steal" come up in conversations where the price of a baseball card is the same as a new car, hefty down payment on a house or the yearly (or more, sometimes WAY more) salary for the average joe. This is what I don't like about what this hobby is becoming, the playground of the uber rich. More power to you if you can afford it, but don't say 60K is a bargain, you may alienate more people than you think.
Just my 2 cents, take or leave it.

paul 05-29-2016 09:48 PM

I didn't mean to alienate anyone, and I'm not buying any 40K or 60K cards myself. I meant only that it was a "bargain" compared to the W600 Burkett. I think most people would prefer the Just So Burkett to a W600 Burkett many times over.

Bicem 05-29-2016 10:12 PM

60k is a bargain if it's worth 100k. It's all relative.

frankbmd 05-29-2016 10:31 PM

"Just So" Burkett

I've had several nicknames, but this one I like more than the others.

So don't call me "Charcoal" any more, please.:D

I'm just glad that I'm not doing the Hall of Fame rookie cards thing anymore so I don't need the Just So Burkett!

Rickyy 05-31-2016 05:18 PM

Wow what incredible finds! Great to still see stuff like this coming out of hiding...

Been there done that. Definitely all relative. A lot of hobbies have uber expensive things, baseball card collecting isn't the only one. It's not the card's fault :).

I'm in the HOF rookie market, but $40-$100k is way off limits for me! Beautiful card(s) and incredible find!

$40k questions: Horsepower? fuel mileage? cargo space?

$100k questions: Number of bedrooms? garage? kitchen space?

:D

Where do you live that those are 100K questions? Because I think moving there might be a good option if there's any decent jobs.

Around here the 100K real estate questions are things like Nearest recent murder? Bike gang next door " friendly" to neighbors? Does it have its own bathroom?

Agreed. 100k isn't even a decent downpayment around here...

Haha, I just moved from the New York to the DC metro area hoping it would be a slightly better quality of life. Guess I was wrong there :)
